The third session of the VanBrewers BJCP Study Group is at Big Rock, upstairs in our usual club meeting space.

Our focus for this session will be Category 24 - Belgian ale. This includes:

  • 24A - Witbier
  • 24B - Belgian Pale Ale
  • 24C - Biére de Garde

Study Group Introduction

What is it?

This is a study group that aims to increase our local pool of BJCP-accredited judges, nurture skill development in ranking judges, and assist judges looking to go National or beyond.

Who’s it for?

To participate, you must be a VanBrewers member in good standing. Each session’s size is capped at 16 people, and those registered for upcoming exams will be given priority.

What can I expect?

Each session will focus on one Style Category from the BJCP 2015 Beer Style Guidelines, and will be conducted in a way compatible with BJCP BREWs recommendations.

A rough agenda:

  • Welcome & introduction for new participants.
  • Brief presentation on the overall style category.
  • For each sub-category:
    • Brief presentation on the sub-category.
    • Group tasting of 3-5 beers, 2oz or so double blind pours:
      • 1 or 2 classic examples, may be pulled from 2008 Guidelines if not enough 2015 are locally available.
      • 1 or 2 locally-produced examples.
      • Optional: an out of style or flawed beer added to one of the sub-style flights to offer contrast, ie. witbier poured during the weissbier category.
    • Group discussion, samples revealed at the end.
  • A quick ten-question quiz that asks you to recall certain information discussed during the evening. (Not graded.)
  • Finally, a last sample will be judged on a scoresheet. It may be pulled from any of the subcategories, which may be off-style or flawed, or a classic example of the style. After 10 minutes of silent judging, the group will re-convene and discuss.

How much does it cost?

Due to the nature of the sessions, we’ll be buying multiple commercial beers for sampling. This is a cost that will be shared between participants and the club. Each participant will be expected to pay $10 per session. The club may cover the difference on styles that cost significantly more.

Will this be sanctioned?

Sanctioned status is being pursued, which would allow points to be awarded to organizers, presenters, and participants according to the point outline. This is not guaranteed, but is a desired outcome. There is no timeline on sanctioning, and points cannot be awarded retroactively.

Who’s running these?

Dave Shea (Certified Beer Judge, Certified Cicerone®) got tired of waiting for this to happen so he's making it happen. Collaborators, presenters, and co-conspirators welcomed.
